چکیده

Silicon Carbide Induced Pneumoconiosis: A Microscopic and Biochemical Experimental Study: Marilena PETRAN, et al. Hospital of Occupational Medicine Cluj-Napoca—The pneumoconiogenic effects of silicon carbide were studied in an experimental model by intratracheal instillation of a dose of 50 mg silicon carbide, standardized and commercialized by Duke Scientific Corporation, in a group of 30 guinea pigs killed at 40, 70 and 100 days, respectively. Lung samples were obtained and they were fixed, included, sectioned, stained with hematoxylineosin, van Gieson and Masson’s trichromic and studied under the optical microscope. The microscopic aspects were compared with those of the controls (10 guinea pigs), intratracheally instilled with 1 ml physiological solution (NaCl 0.9%) at the beginning of the experiment and killed with the last group of guinea pigs at 100 days. The optical microscopic study showed important changes in the pulmonary structure: alveolar wall ruptures, infiltration of alveolar septa with round cells and histiocytes, as well as diffuse interstitial fibrosis which was more obvious 100 days after the instillation. Lung tissue hydroxyproline, as a marker of collagen synthesis, showed a significant increase correlated with the occurrence of fibrosis. The results of the experimental research support the pneumoconiogenic effect of silicon carbide. (J Occup Health 1999; 41: 253–258)

Experimental study of fracture mechanics in the aluminum matrix composites containing Fifteen percent silicon carbide particles

In this investigation ‚the fracture toughness of A356 containing15%SiC composite was studied. Al/SiC composites have been considered because of their mechanical and erosion properties .Low fracture toughness in Al/SiC as compared with Aluminium alloys is one of its disadvantage. In this study at first A356 alloy was melted in a smelting electrical furnace then poured into the mould. A356-15% Si...

Interaction of Pyrimidine Nucleobases with Silicon Carbide Nanotube: Effect of Functionalization on Stability and Solvation

This study is about Complexes of Li doped silicon carbide nanotube with Thymine and Cytosine ingas phase and aqueous solutions. Li doped silicon carbide nanotube and its pyrimidine nucleobasecompounds were first modeled by Quantum mechanical calculations in gas phase and in water.Calculated binding energies indicated the stronger ability of thymine to functionalize silicon carbidenanotube than ...

Hard metal pneumoconiosis: a case of giant-cell interstitial pneumonitis in a machinist.

Pneumoconioses are a group of non-neoplastic pulmonary disorders caused by inhaled inorganic particles. Welldescribed forms of pneumoconiosis include those from asbestos, silica, coal dust, beryllium, and hard metals. Giant-cell interstitial pneumonia is an uncommon pneumoconiosis, usually due to exposure to hard-metal compounds, primarily cobalt and tungsten carbide. The natural course of the ...

Adsorption Studies of the Gram-Negative Bacteria onto Nanostructured Silicon Carbide

In this study, we demonstrated a significant adsorption of Pseudomonas putida bacteria onto aggregates of nanofibers (NFSiC) and nanorods (NRSiC) of silicon carbide (SiC) in aqueous suspensions. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were used to quantify adsorption affinities. It was found that adsorption of the bacteria strongly depended on the structure of the silicon carbide and the pH of the aq...
